Matching Green C of E (VC) Primary School

Maths

‘Pure mathematicians just love to try unsolved problems – they love a challenge.’ Andrew Wiles

At Matching Green CE Primary School we intend to use mathematics to teach a rich, balanced and progressive curriculum using maths to reason, problem solve and develop fluent conceptual understanding in each area. We want the children to see the importance of maths, how much we use maths skills in everyday life and its world-wide application.

By adopting a Mastery approach, it is also our intention that all children, regardless of their starting point, will maximise their academic achievement and leave Matching Green CE Primary School with an appreciation and enthusiasm for maths, resulting in a lifelong positive relationship with number.

  • We ensure that we deliver a high quality maths curriculum that is both challenging and enjoyable.
  • We want children to make rich connections across mathematical ideas to develop fluency, mathematical reasoning and competence in solving increasingly sophisticated problems.
  • We intend for our children to be able to apply their mathematical knowledge to science and other subjects.
  • We want them to know that maths is essential to everyday life and that our children are confident mathematicians who are not afraid to take risks.
  • Fully develop independent learners with inquisitive minds who have secure mathematical foundations and an interest in self-improvement.

White Rose Maths

At Matching Green CfE Primary School, we use White Rose Maths to assist our teaching and learning of mathematics. The learning for each year group is split into a number of learning blocks which cover all the appropriate mathematics objectives. Each concept within a block is then split into a series of small steps in order to consolidate the pupils’ conceptual understanding which teachers adapt to suit the needs of the children within their classroom. The schemes ensure an integrated approach to the National Curriculum of mathematics aims of fluency, reasoning and problem solving.
